Punjnud: Dedicated Urdu Keyboard for Android Devices

Being an Urdu blogger and promoter of Unicode Urdu, I have to write lots of Urdu everyday. While doing so on a PC/Laptop there are many software and keyboard layouts available that let you write Urdu fonts but for smartphones and tablets you don’t have much options.
I had been using Multiling keyboard on all of my Android devices for last few months. It has support for more than 130 languages including Urdu, but today I found another great dedicated Urdu Keyboard called Punjnud Keyboard available on the Play Store for free.

Why Windows XP is Still Used?

According to the wikipedia stats collected from various websites the total usage of Windows XP is 28.8%. Even though more advanced versions of the Microsoft Operating System are available such as Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 but  still 28.8% of the users prefer Windows XP. Although Microsoft is going to stop its support for Windows XP in April 4, 2014 and user will not get any security updates. However still some of the portion may use it.

Why Windows XP is Still Used?

According to StatCounter.com, one of the free popular traffic tracking tool for websites and blogs more than 20% of the users uses Windows XP on their PCs. Both genuine and cracked windows xp for which several methods are used to make it genuine are included in the data. Majority of the users are from Asia and specially from China because it is easy to use pirated version there.

What could be the possible reasons?

There could be a couple of answers for this and today in this article I would like to highlight some of the main reasons.

1# People are familiar with it

As it was the first advanced operating system from Microsoft after the Windows 98, most of the people are familiar with it. They can easily operate it and work in it. This could be the first and main reason of its usage.
2# Lack of awareness about Computers

Another possible reason could be that most of the computer users are not really aware about the other operating systems Microsoft has for them. They use XP because it is the currently installed OS in their PC or Laptop.

3# Old PCs or Laptops

Most of the people have old PCs with 256 MB – 512 MB of RAM and that is why they cannot install advanced versions of the OS.

4# Softwares Compatibility

Some of the softwares are only compatible with Windows XP and the user simply can’t stop using the particular software. There are even some games that are only compatible with XP and users are addicted to it.  Thus they are forced to use windows xp.

There may be several other reasons but these are some of the common. However after April 4, 2014 when Microsoft  stops its support for Windows XP,  it can force further users to switch to another OS. If we can see drastic decrease in the %28.8 usage then we can say that majority of the users were using it because of the official support of the Microsoft.

What is your thoughts about Windows XP usage? Feel free to share in comments below.

Ufone and Buksh Foundation Collaborate to Lighten Homes with Solar Energy

Ufone has collaborated with Buksh Foundation, a microfinance organization, to bring convenience through electricity by becoming a part of the latter’s ‘Lighting a Million Lives’ campaign.

The pilot project has been initiated in two villages in Chiniot and through this campaign Ufone intends to facilitate the access and use of solar lighting devices among Pakistan’s rural communities as part of its CSR program.
A Solar Charging Station with five solar panels and five junction boxes has been set up in two villages, Thata Deva and Kalas. Lanterns have been distributed within households and these may be recharged through these solar panels.
This initiative will remove the need for kerosene oil lamps and therefore, reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere in the long run. It also aims to empower women as these stations will be run by selected women from the two villages, where they will be in charge of renting out and selling equipment at the charging stations.
Considering that about 43% (80 million people) of the total population of Pakistan lives without access to electricity, this will really illuminate the lives and homes of many village residents.
Mr. Asher Yaqub Khan, Chief Commercial Officer Ufone said, “Pakistan is facing a serious power problem. “A large section of the population in Pakistan’s rural areas is deprived of energy supply. Our partners at the Buksh Foundation are providing the technical support to boost energy security in rural areas like Chiniot where we have connected several houses through Solar Based Domestic Lighting Systems.”
“Ufone has always been a socially responsible company, we believe it is a great initiative for usto be able to work together and cooperate with Buksh foundation in the spirit of benefiting our country.” He further added.
Fiza Farhan, Chief Executive Officer, Buksh Foundation said “Buksh Foundation is extremely proud of this new partnership with Ufone which promises immense impact in the targeted communities as we provide them with Solar charging stations, while furthering women empowerment and economic activity in the areas. With the support of Ufone we will be able to provide clean energy to those households that were earlier living in the dark; enabling them to get access to better education, health, economic activities, mobilization- simply a better life. This is the way forward towards the paradigm shift in CSR for larger corporates towards real time developmental impact – which is certain to lead to real change in Pakistan.”
